Warning Signs

Signs Your Retaining Wall Needs Help

Duncanville's black clay soil swells up when it rains. It shrinks back down when it's dry. This push and pull hits retaining walls hard. We see it all over town, from Cedar Ridge to Wheatland Road. Walls bow, crack, or tilt in just a few seasons. Leaning blocks, gaps, and bulges are warning signs. Water pooling behind a wall means drainage has failed. That adds more pressure to the wall. Don't wait until the wall falls into your yard. A failed wall can pull soil, fences, and even your foundation with it. Soil pressure and bad drainage cause most wall failures.[1] In our experience, catching problems early saves you cash. You won't need bigger fixes later. One thing most folks don't realize: small cracks grow fast in our clay.

Common Issues

Leaning or Bowing Walls

Soil pressure pushes walls outward over time. A leaning wall can tip fast if it's ignored.

Cracked Block or Brick

Cracks let water in and weaken the wall. We patch or rebuild sections as needed.

Poor Drainage Behind Wall

Trapped water adds weight and pressure. We add drains to let it out.

Settling and Shifting

Clay soil moves with the seasons. We reset footings to keep the wall level.

Erosion at the Base

Runoff washes soil out from under the wall. This weakens the whole thing over time.

Storm Damage

Big spring storms can knock loose blocks or crack joints fast.

My husband and I are so thankful we chose All American Foundation Repair to do our external and internal foundation repair and new drainage system. They were on time every day, and are the hardest working crew I have ever seen! The process was so much better and easier than we expected and the communication and service provided between Dave, Frank and the team was excellent! Also, before leaving they cleaned up the entire perimeter of our home and yard better than it was when they arrived! Now my eggs don’t roll off of the counter anymore and all of our doors close! Highly recommend!

Dave Hall is incredibly knowledgeable about foundations. He came out and gave us an honest assessment of the situation. Turns out that the issues we're seeing in our house (doors not closing, cracks) aren't a foundation issue but a drainage issue. I'm pretty sure most other companies would have found a way to tell us we needed foundation repair.

In addition, we called Dave because of a former boss of mine at Devtek Engineering - Barry. Barry worked for years as an independent foundation assessment engineer and he recommended Dave and All American Foundation after having worked with a number of foundation repair companies.

Common Questions

Retaining Wall Repair Questions

Here are answers to what Duncanville homeowners ask us most.

  • How much does retaining wall repair cost?

Most jobs run between $400 and $8,000 or more. It depends on size and scope. Small crack fixes cost less than full rebuilds. We give a free estimate before we start.

  • How long does a retaining wall repair take?

Small fixes often take a day or two. Big rebuilds with drainage work can take a week. We'll tell you the timeline at your free estimate.

  • Can I repair a retaining wall myself?

Small cracks might be okay to fix yourself. But big problems need a pro. Duncanville's clay soil adds pressure that DIY fixes can't handle. In our experience, a wrong fix can make the wall fail later.

  • How often do retaining walls need repair?

Most walls last many years with good drainage. Our clay soil speeds up wear, though. We suggest a check every few years. This is extra true after big storms. Early checks catch small problems before they grow.

  • How urgent is a leaning retaining wall?

A leaning wall is urgent. It can fail without warning. Soil pressure keeps pushing once a wall starts to tilt. Call us as soon as you notice it move.

  • What are the signs a retaining wall is failing?

Look for leaning, cracking, bulging, or gaps at the base. Water pooling near the wall is a red flag too. Any of these mean it's time to call us.

  • Do you fix drainage behind retaining walls?

Yes, we add drains behind walls to ease water pressure. Bad drainage is a top reason walls fail in our clay soil. Fixing it makes your repair last longer.
